Paint Colors That Go With White Oak Floors (9 LRVs)
White oak floors want walls with a tan or green undertone, not pink or yellow. Compare 9 Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore picks by published LRV.

The paint colors that go with white oak floors share two traits: a tan, gray, or green undertone rather than pink or yellow, and a light reflectance value (LRV) that is clearly lighter or clearly deeper than the floor, never a near match. White oak reads beige to light brown with no red in the grain, so pinkish whites and yellow beiges fight it.
Start with Benjamin Moore Pale Oak OC-20 (LRV 69) for a warm neutral, Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82) for a soft white, or Sea Salt SW 6204 (LRV 63) if you want color.
This guide is for a room with white oak already down, natural or lightly stained, where the wall is the part you can still change. If your floor is red oak with a pink cast, or honey oak from the 1990s, skip to the avoid list below. For the window side of the decision, see our north facing and west facing paint guides, and for a deep wall over a pale floor, the chocolate brown living room picks.
What paint color goes with white oak floors?
A wall color with a tan, gray, or soft green base, at least one clear step lighter or deeper than the floor. White oak's own tone is beige to light brown; hardwood suppliers describe it as "beige, tan, and light brown, with no pink or red in the grain," which is the difference from red oak. The wall should agree with that beige, or sit far enough away from it to read as a deliberate contrast.
Three things decide whether a color works, and the name on the can is not one of them:
- Undertone. Tan, greige, gray green, and blue gray all sit comfortably next to white oak. Pink whites and yellow creams pick a fight with the grain.
- LRV gap. A greige within a few points of the floor's brightness makes floor and wall blur into one beige mass. Go lighter (LRV 75 and up) or deeper (under 35).
- The finish on the floor. An oil based polyurethane ambers and pushes white oak toward gold; a waterborne finish keeps it pale. Match the wall to the floor you have, not the floor you ordered.
Here are the nine colors I keep specifying over white oak, from the brightest white to the one real dark. Every LRV is the manufacturer's published value, rounded to a whole number.
| Color | Brand | LRV | Undertone | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chantilly Lace OC-65 | Benjamin Moore | 90 | Clean, near neutral white | Trim, ceilings, a gallery feel |
| Greek Villa SW 7551 | Sherwin-Williams | 84 | Soft white, faint beige | Walls in a room with little sun |
| White Dove OC-17 | Benjamin Moore | 83 | Warm white with a gray whisper | The safest white over white oak |
| Alabaster SW 7008 | Sherwin-Williams | 82 | Creamy white, no yellow | Whole house walls |
| Pale Oak OC-20 | Benjamin Moore | 69 | Warm gray greige | The default neutral |
| Sea Salt SW 6204 | Sherwin-Williams | 63 | Green gray, shifts with light | Bedrooms and baths |
| Agreeable Gray SW 7029 | Sherwin-Williams | 60 | Warm gray, beige in lamplight | Open plans used all day |
| Evergreen Fog SW 9130 | Sherwin-Williams | 30 | Muted green gray | One wall, or a dining room |
| Hale Navy HC-154 | Benjamin Moore | 8 | Classic navy | Built ins, an office, a powder room |
Pale Oak is the one to sample first. Benjamin Moore's own description says the color "conjures the quiet majesty of white oak," and in practice it reads as a slightly lighter, slightly grayer echo of the floor, which is exactly the relationship that looks intentional. If you want the wall to disappear behind furniture and art, go up to White Dove or Alabaster instead.

Hale Navy is here because white oak is one of the few floors that can take a true dark without the room going heavy. The pale floor carries the light; the navy carries the room. At LRV 8 it absorbs more than 90 percent of what hits it, so keep it to an office, a dining room, or built ins, and keep the bulbs at 2700K.
What Sherwin-Williams paint colors go with white oak floors?
Alabaster SW 7008 for white walls, Agreeable Gray SW 7029 for a neutral, and Sea Salt SW 6204 for a quiet color. All three are long running Sherwin-Williams favorites, and they stay popular over white oak for the same reason: none of them carries a pink or yellow base.
| Color | LRV | How it reads over white oak | Trim pairing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greek Villa SW 7551 | 84 | Brighter than Alabaster, still soft | Pure White SW 7005 |
| Alabaster SW 7008 | 82 | Creamy and calm, never yellow | Alabaster on trim too |
| Sea Salt SW 6204 | 63 | Green in warm light, blue gray in north light | Alabaster SW 7008 |
| Agreeable Gray SW 7029 | 60 | Gray at noon, beige at night | Pure White SW 7005 |
| Evergreen Fog SW 9130 | 30 | Smoky olive, grounds the pale floor | Alabaster SW 7008 |
Alabaster was Sherwin-Williams' 2016 Color of the Year, and the company describes it as a "balanced white" that "delivers refreshing serenity." Over white oak the balance is the point: it has enough warmth to keep the floor from looking cold, and not enough yellow to turn the oak gold.
Agreeable Gray is the color most people mean when they say greige, and it earns the title over white oak because its beige side matches the floor's tan while its gray side keeps the two apart. At LRV 60 it is mid light, so it needs a bright trim; Pure White SW 7005 keeps the edges crisp.
Evergreen Fog is the deep option. It is the color I use when a client wants the pale floor to feel grounded rather than floaty, and our full Evergreen Fog review covers how far it can go in a room before it closes in.

Which Benjamin Moore colors go with white oak floors?
White Dove OC-17 (LRV 83) and Pale Oak OC-20 (LRV 69) are the two to sample, with Chantilly Lace OC-65 (LRV 90) for trim and Hale Navy HC-154 (LRV 8) for a dark. Benjamin Moore publishes its LRVs on each color page, so these four figures come straight from the manufacturer.
White Dove is the better white over white oak than most people's first instinct, which is a brighter, cooler white. Benjamin Moore calls it a "clean and classic white," and the slight gray in it keeps the wall from looking yellow next to the floor's beige. Chantilly Lace, at LRV 90, is the crisper choice and reads nearly pure white; use it where the room already gets strong daylight, or on trim against any of the mid tones above.
Do gray paint colors go with white oak floors?
Yes, if the gray has a warm or green base. A blue gray with no warmth can make white oak look dingy, because the floor's beige reads as dirt next to a cold wall. Warm grays and greiges do the opposite: they pull the floor's gray grain lines forward and the room looks composed.
The three grays from the table above, in order of warmth:
- Pale Oak OC-20 (LRV 69): the warmest, barely gray at all in a sunny room. The no risk pick.
- Agreeable Gray SW 7029 (LRV 60): a true greige, splits the difference and shifts with the light.
- Sea Salt SW 6204 (LRV 63): technically a green, reads as a soft gray green on the wall. The one to pick if plain gray feels flat.
One caution on depth. Grays between LRV 45 and 58 are where white oak rooms most often go muddy, because the wall and the floor land at similar brightness. If you want a mid gray, go to a dark like Evergreen Fog or a light like Pale Oak instead of splitting the difference. The same principle, applied to a windowless or dim room, is in why a dark room still looks dark after painting.
What kitchen paint colors go with white oak floors?
In a kitchen, the cabinets decide the wall, not the floor. With white or cream cabinets over white oak, keep the walls in the same white family one step softer, like Alabaster SW 7008 walls under Pure White SW 7005 cabinets. With white oak cabinets as well as white oak floors, the wall needs to break the wood up: Sea Salt SW 6204 or Agreeable Gray SW 7029 does that without competing.
| Cabinet color | Wall pick | LRV | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| White or cream | Alabaster SW 7008 | 82 | Same family, softer than the doors |
| White oak (matching the floor) | Sea Salt SW 6204 | 63 | Cool contrast keeps two woods from merging |
| Navy or black | White Dove OC-17 | 83 | Light walls stop the dark run from closing in |
| Sage or olive green | Pale Oak OC-20 | 69 | Warm greige lets the green read as the color |
A related question that comes up as often as the wall color is which floor looks best under white oak cabinets. The answer is a floor one or two shades different from the cabinets, in either direction, so the doors and the boards do not fuse into one plane. Matching stains top to bottom is the mistake; it looks like one giant piece of plywood. Our renter friendly backsplash ideas cover the third surface in that equation.

What colors should I avoid with honey oak or golden oak floors?
Avoid yellow beige, peach, pink toned whites, and orange leaning tans. Honey and golden oak already carry a lot of yellow, usually because an oil based polyurethane has ambered over the years, and any wall with the same yellow makes the whole room glow like a basement rec room.
What works instead is a cool or green counterweight:
- Sea Salt SW 6204 (LRV 63): the green gray cancels some of the gold and the floor reads warmer and calmer, not oranger.
- Agreeable Gray SW 7029 (LRV 60): the gray half mutes the yellow, the beige half keeps the pairing friendly.
- Evergreen Fog SW 9130 (LRV 30): on one wall, it makes honey oak look like a choice rather than a leftover.
- White Dove OC-17 (LRV 83): for a white, the faint gray in it stops the wall from matching the floor's yellow.
If the floor is red oak rather than golden white oak, the same list applies, with one addition: avoid anything with a pink base, because red oak's rosy undertone will double it. White oak does not have that problem. Per the Wood Database, white oak is also harder (Janka 1,350 against red oak's 1,220), which is a reason to refinish a tired golden white oak floor to a natural waterborne finish rather than replace it. Once the amber is gone, the full table above opens back up. If the honey oak is on your kitchen cabinets rather than the floor, see paint colors that go with honey oak cabinets.
How to test a wall color against your white oak floor
White oak changes with the finish, the window direction, and the hour, so a swatch card held up at the store tells you almost nothing. Spend one weekend on this and you will not repaint.
- Order 8 by 8 inch peel and stick samples of two colors, not six. Pick one white and one neutral from the table, or one neutral and one dark.
- Put them on the wall, low, where the floor meets the baseboard. This is the only place you can judge the pairing. A sample at eye level is judged against the trim, not the floor.
- Check three times in a day: mid morning, late afternoon, and after dark with only your lamps on. The lamp check catches yellow that daylight hides.
- Lay a sheet of white paper on the floor beside the sample. If the floor looks orange against the paper, the finish has ambered and you need a cooler wall than you planned.
- Look at the trim last. The wall must sit at least 10 LRV points from the trim color, or the edges disappear. White Dove walls with Chantilly Lace trim is a 7 point gap, which is why that pairing works best when the trim is in a higher sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does oak go with white?
Yes, and white is the most common wall over white oak for a reason: it lets the floor be the warm element. Choose a white with a touch of gray or cream, such as White Dove OC-17 (LRV 83) or Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82), rather than a stark cool white, which can make the oak look yellow by comparison.
What color is replacing beige in 2026?
Deeper, browner neutrals rather than a different family. The 1stDibs 2026 designer survey put chocolate brown at the top of its color list at roughly 33 percent, and over white oak that shows up as mushroom, greige, and muted green on the walls, with brown arriving in furniture and one accent wall. Pale Oak OC-20 and Agreeable Gray SW 7029 are the two mid tones that read current without reading as plain beige.
Do white oak floors have gray undertones?
Sometimes, depending on the cut and the finish. White oak's base tone is beige to light brown, but rift and quarter sawn boards show more gray in the grain, and a matte waterborne finish keeps that gray visible where an oil based finish would amber over it. Hold a white sheet of paper on the floor in daylight: if the boards look taupe against it, treat the floor as gray leaning and favor Pale Oak or Agreeable Gray.
Should the walls be lighter or darker than white oak floors?
Either, as long as the gap is clear. A wall at LRV 75 or higher reads as a light room with a warm floor; a wall under LRV 35 reads as a deliberate, moody contrast. The range to avoid is a mid tone that lands close to the floor's own brightness, which flattens the two surfaces into one.
What trim color goes with white oak floors?
A soft white that is not pink and not yellow. Chantilly Lace OC-65 (LRV 90) is the crisp choice for trim against colored walls, and Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82) is the softer choice when the walls are white too. Keep trim and wall at least 10 LRV points apart, or use a higher sheen on the trim to make up the difference.
Jihyun Lee writes Spatia's color coverage and checks every LRV in these guides against the manufacturer's current color page before publishing, which is why two of the Benjamin Moore values here differ from the figures still circulating on older paint blogs.
